    (Evaluation on Service Programs)

The water quality analysis course is intended to analyze the contaminants in running water, drinking water and waste water. As far as the relevant units are concerned, if it would like to verify the water quality of drinking fountains, they must entrust some test company to conduct the test. In the process of the test, the school needs to pay the test fees. Therefore, generally, the test will only be conducted against the items required by laws and regulations, such as Escherichiacoli. However, for those beyond the scope of laws and regulations, no test will be conducted. Sometimes, the water condition does affect the drinking water quality adversely, e.g. over conductivity in the water making the water undrinkable or excessive residual chlorine flew out of the fountain representing that the defective processing of water by the filter heart.  Notwithstanding, the general units would not conduct sampling or tests under said circumstances, as the budget prepared by them is limited. Considering that the water quality analysis course was initially intended to test this water quality, and the training would make sense more if the students proceed with the sampling physically, instead of taking the water sample allocated by the laboratory. Given this, the service learning courses at the second semester of 2012 and the second semester of 2014 conducted the test on water quality of drinking fountains around certain school, and the test reports were send to these schools. At the second semester of 2015, we only conducted the test and sampling from a single school and, therefore, could sample more drinking fountains than ever. We also once tested and sampled the water from drinking fountains at various buildings of CYCU. This year, we tested and sampled the water from the drinking fountains at Lao-Jie Xi River Education Center. The Center serves as an environmental education place, primarily for the purpose of providing knowledge of river ecology and river conservation to visitors and groups. The visit to the Center is completely free. The Center also makes drinking fountains available to visitors and volunteers. However, due to the limited budget and legal requirements, it will not conduct any tests on the water quality of the drinking fountains.  Given this, we implemented the Plan out of the intent to provide services to help test the water quality of its drinking fountains. Upon completion of the Plan, we sent the test report to the Center to help it verify the functional status of its drinking fountains.

    3

    Objectives of Plan

To verify the quality of water flew out of the service recipient’s drinking fountains, and evaluate the drinkability of such water to decide whether some additional water treatment facility shall be installed or the filter heart should be replaced with a new one. All data represented by the test items will be included in the report. The participating students can not only have more in-depth understanding about the meaning represented by the water quality analysis result but also learn the skills in sampling and analysis.

Descriptions about expected students’ growth in professions

In the past, the water quality analysis course only stressed the analysis, and the contents of teaching thereof focused on analysis theories. Upon inclusion of the service learning, the students may increase their knowledge about sampling and also know how to apply the water quality analysis result to their life and apply the contents of learning to the community service.

    9

Anticipated benefits to be gained the service recipient

For the time being, the drinking fountains installed in public places will only be subject to the sampling and test on Escherichiacoli and total plate count, while it is impossible for us to verify the water quality of drinking water and running water, and whether the water quality of drinking fountains makes the water drinkable. Meanwhile, it is also impossible for us to find whether the drinking fountains are defective or not. The service learning course is intended to provide said information to the service recipients. The test result may provide the relevant service recipient with the access to verify whether the water quality is normal or not.  As far as the running water and drinking water are concerned, the water quality, and even drinkability, may be determined by analysis of conductivity, residual chlorine, hardness, chloride ion and Escherichiacoli. Meanwhile, the analysis results may serve as the basis for improvement on the drinking water and evaluation about whether the existing running water should be equipped with some additional water treatment facility. The test report will be submitted to the relevant service recipient upon completion of the test. The relevant service recipient will also be invited to attend the presentation of final results to verify the water quality of its drinking fountains.
