WU, CHAO-MING
Department of Information Management
Since Teacher Wu, Chao-Ming held the position as Chair of Department of Information Management in 2001, he has started to boost the service learning program oriented toward “bridging of digital divide” at the Department. Meanwhile, he also held the position as the service learning boosting member of Youth Development Administration. In the school year of 2004, he acted as the Director of Youth IT Volunteer Operations Center of Ministry of Education, engaged in helping Ministry of Education boost the IT volunteer services in colleges/universities throughout the nation. In the school year of 2006, he acted as Secretary General of the Secretariat and Director of Service Learning Center concurrently, engaged in boosting the development of service learning throughout the school. In the school year of 2007, he was awarded by Ministry of Education as the national excellent teacher in service learning in colleges/universities and also led the faculty and teachers of Department of Information Management to form Taiwan Youth IT Volunteer Group, which won the honor for 1st place of the groups participating in the “National Youth Public Participation Award” in Malawi, Africa in 2007.
In order to train the new generation university students to possess such characteristics as kindness, profession, passion and dream. Teacher Wu taught by implementation of service learning, in hopes of making students transforming by sharing his experience.
HUANG, FRANK
Department of Commercial Design
Teacher Huang is now an associate professor of Department of Commercial Design and Head of the Extracurricular Activities Division of Office of Student Affairs concurrently. Meanwhile, he also acts the instructor for Animation Club, Transfer Student Association and Student Association, dedicated to boosting the development of extracurricular activities and encouraging students to engage in service learning. In the professional courses of Department of Commercial Design, he leads students to integrate their profession into the volunteer services for the disadvantaged groups or public welfare groups they are engaged in. For the past few years, he has worked with the students to help more than 30 service recipients and design plentiful promotional materials for the purpose of public welfare.
Meanwhile, Teacher Huang also participates in the school-wide “service learning” courses organized by the Center for General Education to instruct students to execute multiple service programs and attends such promotional activities as Service Learning Seminar and Teacher Workshop to improve the depth and contents of CYCU service learning. For the time being, he acts as the counselor for youth volunteers of the “Youth Peace Volunteer Group” of Youth Development Administration. He has presented multiple papers at various national conferences and won lots of encores from and outside the school. Also, he has been invited to share his experience in combination of professional courses and service learning in the other schools, including Nanya Institute of Technology, JinWen University of Science & Technology, Vanung University, Hsuan Chuang University, National Ilan University, China University of Technology and Tainan University of Technology, and also communicate CYCU experience to teachers and students of the other schools. Teacher Huang hopes that all students may “learn by doing” and change the world step by step out of the creativity idea and passion for caring and service.
CHANG, TAO-PEN
Department of Commercial Design
Teacher Chang has concerned about service learning permanently. Since the school year of 2005, Teacher Chang has integrated the service to non-profit-seeking organizations into the “advertising design courses” of Department of Commercial Design, led students to execute more effective advertisements based on real cases, and guided students into the area of service learning by implementation. Since the school year of 2007, Teacher Chang has also worked with Department of Business Administration to boost the “Inter-college/department professional service learning” to match the professions of students from both departments and, therefore, created the first service learning teaching method throughout the nation. In the past four years, Teacher Chang has helped more than 20 non-profit-seeking organizations including Organ Procurement Association.
He helped satisfying the non-profit-seeking organizations’ needs for marketing, fund raising and upgrading of public awareness by planning and designing advertisements. He organizes the presentation of results each year and invites the service recipients’ representatives to share the service experience with students, a very heartwarming scene.
The student group instructed by him in the past years has won top 3 places of the creative design for the “Holistic Care Award”. In 2008, the film entitled “Speak for Hugs” produced by the group for the Animal Society participated in the “questions to President” video competition organized by Wretch, and won the “Strongest Award” and “Experts’ Choice Award”.
Creative idea and design may not only beautify visual perception but also care the meaning and value of more life and create a better society through the service learning.
CHIN, CHUN TSUNG
Department of International Business
Believing that “service learning” would become impressive and touching memory for students when they are continuing education in school, Teacher Chin has integrated the subject, “counseling service for new immigrants’ children”, into the economy of East Asia courses since the school year of 2008 to make the students deal with the challenge from the areas other than classes. By mentally analyzing the regional economic development and discussing the achievement and challenge in the development of East Asia countries, the students are trained to develop their global view and construct their ability to think, judge and introspect. Meanwhile, by implementing the service learning, the students may know about the cultures and customs of East Asia, conduct in-depth analysis on problems derived from the economic development of East Asia, train their humane care and fulfill CYCU’s holistic education spirit.
Teacher Chin and students of the Department of International Business headed for Bai-Ji Elementary School of Daxi and Si-Wei Elementary School of Yangmei to provide the new immigrants’ children with such services as tutoring, pull-out learning, life education, group activities and daily life counseling, and won recognition from parents and praise from CYCU. CYCU students’ care and tutoring warm the heart of all new sons of Taiwan. These children growing in love will feed back to the society with their love in turn.
CHANG, YAO-JEN
Department of Electronic Engineering
Teacher Chang, Yao-Jen has led the faculty and students of Department of Electronic Engineering to engage in learning service and volunteer service in class since the school year of 2007. He started to boost the IT Family Camp of Fanling Community around CYCU, and then extended the services to the map information system design of Tsuei Ma Ma housing rental website, and employment service system design and testing for people with cognitive impairments of Jen-Ai Hospital. Teacher Chang is used to engaging in community participation and social service with great enthusiasm, and upholding that in the needs of others to see his own responsibility is the great happiness for him.
Teacher Chang has instructed his students to form the service learning group for three years consecutively. Oriented toward the service to people with cognitive impairments, the group won 2nd place of the Holistic Caring Award for the category of IT. Its study on people with cognitive impairments, “Full Escort/With Obstruction but Without Obstacles”, even won 1st place of the Presentation Contest (Technological Innovation Award) throughout CYCU. The assistive technology device for people with cognitive impairments researched and developed by the group has attended ACM international competition for three years consecutively, and won the award from Microsoft each time. In the process of helping the disadvantaged groups by profession and technology, teachers and students received the precious experience in learning how to contribute and care the society. When dealing with the people with cognitive impairments and employment service social workers, the students found that they were engaging in a conversation of the heart with their permanent plain smile. Their life inspired the students a lot.
LIAW, EN-CHONG
Department of Applied Linguistics and Language Studies
Since 2005, Teacher Liao, En-Chung has boosted the child English education in the kindergarten affiliated to CYCU. In 2006, Teacher Liao started the distance English learning plan of Nanzhang Elementary School which combined the specialty of students of Department of Applied Linguistics and Language Studies and Department of Information Management and utilized the characteristics of network without limitation of time and space to provide child students in township and rural areas with learning resources. The primary school’s distance English learning plan helped child students review class after school or preview class before school and solve the problem about insufficiency of teachers to improve the learning environment for child students in rural areas.
Meanwhile, Teacher Liao also organized the service learning courses to support the “Life American” class for the students of 1st~4th grades of Chung-Yuan Elementary School and lead the university students to apply their specialty in foreign language to the teaching strategies and selection and evaluation of teaching materials. Therefore, the students may apply the professional theories learned by them in class to the English class for elementary school students. After all, practical experience is critical to the training of language teachers to be. Meanwhile, he also offered the students the chance to do what they are good at and also feed back to the society and verify what “Take from society / Give back to society” mean.
