2011 Academic Year

Teacher Change, Yao-Jen of
Department of Electronic Engineering

Teacher Change, Yao-Jen of Department of Electronic Engineering was selected as the excellent service learning teacher for the second time this year. He recalls that he was contracted by National Science Council to engage in the project for assistive technology research five years ago by accident; since then, he started to participate in the non-profit-seeking organizations for the mentally and physically disordered. After that, it looks like that another life was opened for the students, and especially himself. He thought that his life should consist of teaching, research, papers, summer and winter vacation, and he felt that he would never secure sufficient sense of security. Notwithstanding, since he participated in the project, he has sound knowledge of non-profit-seeking organizations and received the brand new experience and feeling about the life after communicating with the physically and mentally disordered and, therefore, saw the new possibility and meaning of one’s life.Teacher Chang has instructed his students to form the service learning group for six years consecutively. Oriented toward the service to people with cognitive impairments, the group has won 1st place of the Holistic Caring Award for the category of IT and 1st place of the Presentation Contest throughout CYCU successively. The group has also won 1st place and 2nd place of the InnoServe Awards in the past years, and attended the ACM international competition for five years consecutively, and won the award each time. In the process of helping the disadvantaged groups by profession and technology, teachers and students received the precious experience in learning how to contribute and care the society.

Teacher Liu, Hung-Huan of
Department of Electronic Engineering

Since Teacher Liu, Hung-Huan of Department of Electronic Engineering participated in the interdisciplinary integrated research plan of National Science Council investigated by Teacher Chang, Yao-Jen of Department of Electronic Engineering in 2006, he has started his research in assistive technology device and led students to participate in the non-profit-seeking organizations for the physically and mentally disabled until now. In the process of the service, our role was transformed from the service provider to the service recipient. The students and teachers all learned how to deal with their life, recognize their own value and inspire each other with the teamwork from the physically and mentally disordered and volunteer group.
