An article contributed to a beach cleanup movement! Hung Chia-Yu, a CYCU student, was aware from an article posted on line that some student from Siao Liouciou, Pingtung was very sorry to see the beach in his hometown was full of garbage. Therefore, Hong Chia-You called on 16 students successfully to engage in the beach cleanup with him in Siao Liouciou. The energy spent by him in environmental protection touched other tourists and the tourists also joined the movement later (see the photo provided by CYCU student) to return the local people a clean beach.

The movement initiator, the chairman of the student association for CYCU Li-Xin Dormitory Hung Chia-Yu, happened to see an article posted on line that a university student from Siao Liouciou felt sorry to see the beautiful beach of his hometown was full of the garbage dumped by massive tourists when he returned home. Therefore, Hung Chia-Yu initiated the beach cleanup movement, in hopes of extending the spirit upheld by CYCU environmental service courses to Siao Liouciou.

Hung Chia-Yu foresaw that many tourists would flood into Siao Liouciou during the consecutive holidays for Tomb Sweeping Day; therefore, he headed for Siao Liouciou together with his classmates to engage in the beach cleanup on the three days he chose out of the consecutive holidays. As a result, the other people who saw that Hung Chia-Yu and his classmates were picking the garbage took away their own garbage with them voluntarily and even helped clean up the beach altogether.

The tourist surnamed Chang from Hsinchu and his family members were so touched that they joined the beach cleanup together. Mr. Chang showed that he is used to concerning about the environmental protection issue and always avoids using disposable tableware as possible as he could, in order to reduce the waste of plastic products. By this chance, he made his children who became elementary school students recently pick up the garbage together with these university students and returned a beautiful beach to Siao Liouciou in one hour.

For the beach cleanup movement, the students invited some environmental protection group to introduce the marine ecology in advance.  The general coordinator for the movement, Chen Chuan-Yu, mentioned, “Sea turtles have been identified as protected species because of the plastic garbage produced by human beings. When every one steps onto the beach in Siao Liouciou, he will better experience the importance of protection of the environment and earth”.
