ASUS 2017 International Volunteer Group Extend Charity to 9 Countries in South East Asia and Africa

ASUS Foundation Digital Inclusion Plan covers the construction of infrastructure hardware, cultivation of digital learning ability and preservation of digital contents and cultures. This summer, it has been 7th time for the Foundation to invite hundreds of volunteers to head for the nine countries including Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Nepal, Cambodia, Myanmar and Malaysia in South East Asia, India, and Tanzania in Africa since 2011. By donation and teaching of computer equipment and hardware, the Foundation helps the rural area schools and communities in these countries construct a friendly digital learning environment to bridge the digital divide.

By donation and teaching of computer equipment and hardware, the Foundation helps the rural area schools and communities in these countries construct a friendly digital learning environment to bridge the digital divide. On 8th day of this month, ASUS organized the “2017 International Volunteer Presentation of Results Ceremony” at its headquarters in Guandu to gather all participating volunteers to share their experience and keep passing on the good role model for world citizens. In addition to ASUS colleagues, the current international volunteer group members also consisted of ten volunteer groups, including the volunteer groups from National Chng Kung University and Fo Guang University, which joined the service group for the first time, and the volunteer groups from Yuan Ze University, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, National Taipei University of Business and CYCU. All the groups engaged in digital services overseas and provided the courses including the introduction to computers, basic access to Internet, application of basic software (Word/Excel, et al.), basic photographing, cultural exchange and group activities. More than a total of 4,000 trainees received the service.

The volunteers providing services in Khon Kaen City, Thailand shared their experience, saying that “after visiting Khon Kaen City, we realize how lucky we are for living in Taiwan; however, because it is too easy for us to gain resources, we forget to cherish the same; these students taught us a lesson.” The volunteers heading for Tanzania found that the students desiring to take the computer courses were increasing more and more in the first two or three days after the course commenced. Therefore, given the insufficient classrooms, teachers and computer equipment, they practiced their creative ideas and set up a learning station outdoors with two sets of desks and chairs and notebooks, so that more children could share the monitor and learn together. The volunteer groups heading for Nepal practiced the hand in hand plan, trained the advanced camp trainees to complete their courses and helped the basic camp children with the learning as trainers to pass on the passion and results of digital learning. The trainees indicated that the computer courses made them transform and learn a lot about computers, and have the chance to share what they learned and teach the other children from children’s homes. Even if they had to walk for 1~3 hours each day to attend the camp, the self-growth and sensation they received spoke for themselves.

ASUS’s “people-oriented” company culture not only values the talent education and care for disadvantaged groups but also implements the digital inclusion plan based on the company’s core competency, in hopes of bridging the digital divide. This summer vacation, in addition to the international volunteer plan, it also worked with ASUS volunteers to promote the 4-day “ASUS Digital Camp” to teach the children of Fa Zhi Elementary School in Nantou and Tongan Elementary School in Changhua about Zenbo programs, 3D printing and Scratch program design, train their logical ideas and inspire their creativity.
