CYCU Dedicated to Promoting Community Development Won the “2016Creating Communities Action Plan” Grand Prize

CYCU keeps concerning the community development and maintenance of cultural and creative industries, and spares no effort to help Taoyuan develop locally. This year, CYCU groups participated in the “2016 Creating Communities Action Plan” and outperformed from a total of 7,327 community proposals throughout Taiwan. Three student groups won the model award and seed award for the college group. CYCU alumnus also teamed up to participate in the Taoyuan community development proposal competition and won 3 model awards for the community group. As a result, CYCU became the biggest winner in the competition.

The “Creating Communities Action Plan” was promoted by Sinyi Realty Inc., which won the “CSR Award” of CommonWealth Magazine in 2016, in hopes of urging schools and the youth to care the communities where they are living. In the Competition this year, CYCU’s “Longtan Brave Youth” team won the model award for the college group with respect to the local issue about Longtang. The alumni of Department of Interior Design, Tu Yen-Ying, participated in the “Taoyuan Art and Culture Front” and won 3 model awards for the community group based on his proposals about Zhongli and Guishan. Meanwhile, the “Lu Xu Ai Volunteer Group” and “Overseas Service-Learning Group in Cambodia” instructed by the Service-Learning Center won the seed awards. The care for Taoyuan and profession of the teachers and students from CYCU were recognized by the society again.

The “CYCU Longtan Brave Youth” team, which won the model award for the college group and 1st place of online poll consisted of the two graduate students from CYCU’s College of Design, Chang Chih-Yu and Chang Chun-Wei. Based on the topic about activation of the old city and preservation of cultural assets, they proposed the community reconstruction plan, “Story – Longtan Village”, in hopes of passing on the memory about the architecture, industrial arts and cultural stories in the old town.

Chang Chun-Wei indicated that “Longtan is a very interesting place full of abundant local stories, folk arts and custom & tradition but needing to be cared and explored; therefore, we propose this plan in hopes of finding another opportunity for the old town to move forward again.” Chang Chih-Yu also mentioned that “As a local of Longtan, Zhongli, I love my Longtan and hope that more brave youth are willing to return the hometown to fulfill the important mission about passing on the local cultures and presenting another different style for this old community!”

The “Taoyuan Art and Culture Front” attended by the alumni of Department of Interior Design, Du Yen-Ying consist of the local youth of Taoyuan residing in communities permanently, who make every endeavor to organize cultural and creative activities, seminars and shows, and even organize the “Arts Festival in Taoyuan” independently in order to make Taoyuan no longer be the “cultural desert” everyone thought it was. The team recorded the brilliant stories about the merchants in the old market areas according to the plan for “Zhongli Life Museum: Keep Memory About Old Merchants”. Meanwhile, according to the “Activation of Tsao Shun-Ho Store” plan, the team would activate the old building owned by the Tsao Family in Japanese Colonial Period. According to the “Longmen Market: Renovation of Idle Space at Zhongli Rear Station” plan, the team would work with the local chief of village to organize and renovate the idle space at Zhongli Rear Station. The three plans have been undergoing successively. We hope that everyone can cherish old stuff and give the old stuff a new life!

Dean of CYCU’s College of Design, Chen Chi-Peng, indicated that “Public welfare development and social participation refer to the most important objective and orientation upheld by me as the Dean of the College. We congratulate the students and alumnus of the College of Design who won the honors. CYCU teams will keep contributing their profession and passion to this land, Taoyuan.”
