CYCU Teachers and Students Develop Creative Ideas to Promote University’s Social Responsibility and Activate Siaoli Cultural Green Way

The students of CYCU Department of Interior Design built the scarecrow road marks by integrating the beauty of Siaoli rice paddies.

CYCU Department of Landscape Architecture led the local child students to reconstruct the pond beside Siaoli Elementary School and make it become an ecological pool.

News: In order to make the old communities reborn, CYCU worked with the neighboring Zhusiao Community of Bade to bring new energy to the local communities by aiming at “Age Friendly, Shiyang Community Development and Design Incubation” and gathering students from the 7 departments/institutes, including Department of Architecture, Department of Interior Design, Department of Commercial Design, Department of Landscape Architecture, Department of Environmental Engineering, Department of Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, and Master Program in Cultural and Creative Design. The students of Department of Interior Design built the scarecrow road marks by integrating the beauty of Siaoli paddies and replayed “the Lady Stone” legend with the glowing stone. The students of Department of Architecture produced the historical humanistic tabletop game, “Zhusiao Chess”. CYCU teachers and students fulfilled the university’s social responsibility and provided the locals with a new change and future! Siaoli of Bade District in Taoyuan integrates diversified groups’ cultures. Some famous and precious historical assets of Hakka Village are located inside the local Siaoli Community, such as the birthplace of cloth washing culture and Lady Stone. Jincheng Community is a veteran village and also a disadvantaged community cared by only few people. In order to make the glory of the local centennial washing pool and the faith center, Lady Stone Temple, reappear, the students of CYCU Department of Architecture practiced their professional knowledge and designed the chair helpful for the elderly crouch down beside the pool when washing clothes. The freshman of Department of Architecture, Liao Chih-Ying, revealed that the part of Siaoli impressing her mostly was the washing pool, and she hoped to preserve the local unique cloth washing culture and beauty of the village with care. Meanwhile, the local “Hecheng Hakka Bayin Musical Troupe” in the district of Siaoli owns the Hakka traditional music skills which are going to be lost. In order to make the new generation feel the charm of traditional Bayin, the students of CYCU Department of Commercial Design activated the Bayin teaching materials with the AR technology, so that one may listen to the play by Hakka Bayin Band directly via the scan design on mobile device and the traditional cultures could integrate technology and fun at the same time. In order to make the ecological treasure beside Siaoli Elementary School, “Pond”, become the best education place, CYCU Department of Landscape Architecture worked with Taiwan Wetland Restoration Society to invite the community residents and child students to reconstruct the landscape. The university students led them to organize the ecological pool and grow original plants which could purify water quality, and then worked with the Department of Environmental Engineering to perform water quality inspection and environment education. The Chairman of Zhusiao Community Development Association, Bade, Teng Hsu-Tung, seeing that the students wearing frog suit organized environment in the water in such cold weather, said that he was moved and also appreciated the contribution by CYCU teachers and students, and hoped that the Community could grow and get better because of the efforts spent by all of people. The College of Design continued to activate Zhusiao District. CYCU Department of Environmental Engineering, Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and Master program in Cultural and Creative Design also practiced the interdisciplinary profession and created the new possibility for the locals on the topic “Age Friendly”. The teachers and students of Department of Environmental Engineering aimed to build the “Low-Carbon, Environmental and Sustainable Homeland” and organized multiple workshops for improvement of low-carbon communities and volunteer training to enable the elderly in the communities to experience green painting and environmental pot culture. The Master Program in Cultural and Creative Design specially built the “Jincheng Zhusiao Work Station” as the venue where the community residents may interact with each other routinely and local children may be cared safely after school. The students of Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language took over the project and resided at the Station to provide the children with tutoring service. Meanwhile, they combined three major courses to train the students to play the role of reporter to visit the elderly houses in the community and record the elderly life story as new journalism. Associate Professor of Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, Peng Ni-Ssu, said that such learning could enable the university students to know more about the contents of the “diversified cultural education” courses. Dean of CYCU’s College of Design, Chen Chi-Peng, indicated that CYCU has engaged in the community development in Siaoli, Bade since tens of years ago, and still devoted the whole school’s strength to work hard for the community’s future until now, because CYCU valued the Service-Learning and the University’s social responsibility very much. From January 12 to January 14, the “Siaoli Cultural Green Way-Presentation of Results of CYCU USR Project” will be organized in the activity center of Siaoli Elementary School (November 14, Yuchixia, Siaoli Village, Bade District) and all of people are welcomed to visit the Presentation to experience how the university students’ creative ideas activated and changed the community.
