CYCU Won Multiple Awards and Honors for Promotion of University’s Social Responsibility

The “CYCU Overseas Volunteer in Cambodia” was honored the golden award for the “Youth Overseas Peace Volunteer Group” by Ministry of Education and took a photo with the Vice President. Provided by CYCU

CYCU has been dedicated to promoting the university’s social responsibility permanently and encouraging teachers and students to provide services to the society and world physically. It also continued to execute the public welfare projects in such rural areas to Fuxin District of Taoyuan, Hengshan Township of Hsinchu and Zhoulan Township of Miaoli, and even engaged in overseas volunteer services in Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Salvador and other countries in the Central and South America.

These university students’ power and efforts in providing service won recognition from the governmental entities. They also won a gold prize and two bronze prizes at the “Youth Overseas Peace Volunteer Group Sharing & Presentation Ceremony” held by Ministry of Education and received a total of 3 honors for the Outstanding Volunteer Award by group/individual by Taoyuan City Government.

Meanwhile, CYCU has also won the five major awards from Ministry of Education and as the excellent Service-Learning school, excellent course teaching plan, excellent teachers and excellent administrative staff. All of these reflect the abundant results received by CYCU after promoting the Service-Learning and upholding the University’s social responsibility permanently!

CYCU has started to promote the professional Service-Learning and encouraged students to participate in overseas service to develop their global view. This year, the Cambodia volunteer group which won the golden prize for the youth overseas peace volunteer group inherited the senior’s service experience for 8 years trained the village youth teachers via the “Village Seed English Teacher Workshop”. The student of Department of Electronic Engineering, Wang Ssu-Han, revealed that “during the service, a Cambodia teacher once said that I hope that my students and students from cities may have the equal chance to receive education”, and what the teacher said made everyone realize the influence rendered by teachers’ training.

Meanwhile, both of Myanmar overseas volunteer group and Salvador overseas volunteer group also won the bronze award at the Ceremony this year. The senior student of Department of Psychology who acted as the Salvador group leader, Lai Yu-Hsuan, mentioned that “it has been the third time for them to teach the local juvenile about IT courses. The rural areas children own poor resources but all of them kept thankful for everything, and we, as the children living in Taiwan well provided, should introspect ourselves more.”

In addition to the international volunteer service, CYCU teachers and students also execute multiple Service-Learning projects domestically. The “Creative Service with Care Design” team, which won 3rd place of the Outstanding Volunteer Award, was led by Teacher Chen Li-Yu and Teacher Lin Wen-Chi of Department of Interior Design. The team has constructed the hope classroom in Qehuy Tribe, Fuxin District, Taoyuan and assisted Carpenter’s House in Zhongli District in building the community public welfare coffee shop, reconstructing the environment of LOHAS Preschool, and improving the access-free environment of Ai Jia Development Center in Pingzhen District successively since 2010. The team even helped the aboriginal elementary school in Fongbin Township, Hualian County produce lockers with the recycled materials from the graduation exhibition once. A team member, the sophomore student of Department of Interior Design Chen Ying-Chieh, indicated that “the meaning of care design should reside in verification of the users’ actual needs. The physical practicing in real life may help improve the disadvantaged group’s living environment and will make our profession in design more user friendly and heartwarming!”

CYCU is used to encouraging its students to care the society with their professional knowledge. So far it has organized 447 professional Service-Learning courses for departments/graduated schools. More than 20,000 teachers and students participated in the Service-Learning physically and practiced the University’s social responsibility to extend the positive energy from more young people from schools to the society and from Taiwan to the world.
