Motive of Service

Numerous used computers are disposed of by enterprises, individuals or entities all over the world each year. As a matter of fact, these computers could be reused in a different manner to extend their life cycle. The computer resources are identified as the basic requirement for promoting digital work. Making good use of used computers is identified as one of the solutions to match suitable computers for non-profit-seeking organizations with less expenditure and to upgrade their ability to apply the information technology.

The Team utilizes the members’ majors and introduces the service concept, recalls the computers eliminated by enterprises or individuals, renovates the computers, and then provides them to the entities that need them. The chance for our activity was given by Typhoon Morakot in 2009. The typhoon had major impacts on Taiwan at that time, causing flood, landfall and landslides in many areas in Taiwan. Many schools were situated within the affected area, and the computer equipment in the schools became unusable after being damaged by the typhoon so seriously. Therefore, many people initiated the activity to renovate computers, or went to the affected areas to preform the maintenance work. Since then, we joined the activity, and still continue to engage in the activity now.

Summary of Service

For the time being, there are 130,000 non-profit-seeking organizations in Taiwan. They are responsible for remedying the gap between the social needs and governmental subsidies. Notwithstanding, most of them are operating by raising funds and based on the few subsidies granted by governments, or by requesting project expenditure. Now, it is more and more difficult for them to keep operating in these manners. Given this, it is not easy for them to maintain the specific IT environment inside their organizations. Meanwhile, in fact, these companies hope to continue the use of those resources instead of eliminating computers periodically. Therefore, we play the role responsible for activating these computers again and creating the new experience in making used computers available again at any time.

Mode of Service

Through the propagation by Frontier Foundation, Taiwan and various entities, many suppliers will contact us when they need to eliminate old computers. Because we are able to process the space limits in the computers and meet the donees’ needs, we will verify the status of computers from the donors at first and decide whether to accept the computers, so as to make our service more effective. Therefore, the donated computers received by us usually refer to the similar models. This helps us organize and maintain the same and increase our working efficiency. Upon receipt of the computers and related accessories from the donors, we will classify them by attributes and record the relevant information of each computer to help us organize systems and replace parts. After that, we will send the computers to the non-profit-seeking organizations for reuse.

Effect of Service

After receiving these used computers, the non-profit-seeking organizations (NPO) can enhance their ability to help the disadvantaged group. Besides, in fact, the NPO would not impose too strict requirements about the computers, as they only need the computers able to process paperwork and social communication. The used computers renovated by the Team members may be available immediately when the power is on, as if they were brand new. Therefore, no additional repairing expenses are needed and we may achieve our purpose for donating the computers to NPOs.
