Recitals:

1.     The Carpenter’s House of Taoyuan County

The Carpenter’s House leads the modern people to build the correct value, guides the disadvantaged groups to secure stable shelter service, provides juveniles with adequate leisure spaces, and also boost the sustainable development of the local communities in Taoyuan and Zhongli. By upholding the belief in passionate and devotional public service, the Carpenter’s House continues to promote juvenile services, care for the disadvantaged groups, and environmental protection and recycling in the districts of Taoyuan and Zhongli. Therefore, the Carpenter’s House hopes to provide and promote the juvenile service and promote, manage and plan the bazaar activities extending care for the disadvantaged groups through CYCU teams.

2.     Eden Social Welfare Foundation (Eden Coffee Shop)

Eden Coffee Shop is a competitive sheltered workshop, also a system subordinated to the Foundation organized in order to enable the physically and mentally disabled to learn a skill and to increase employment opportunities for the disabled. Eden Coffee Shop aims at “self-sufficiency” and “sustainable development”. Therefore, when hiring employees or procuring raw materials, it takes low costs into consideration as the first priority. Eden Coffee Shop hopes to have CYCU teams draft the management proposals for increase in the sales of the sheltered workshop and product development on behalf of it.

3.     Taoyuan Animal Shelter

Taoyuan Animal Shelter adopts the cats and dogs caught by the animal controllers upon receipt of the report by the various village and township residents in Taoyuan County, and abandoned or picked up by residents in the County. The cats and dogs adopted by the Shelter will be treated in the manner required under the Animal Protection Act, if no one adopts or claims them within twelve (12) days upon the public notice. The CYCU team will help promote and manage the issues about animal protection and ecological conservation to boost the management and promotion of animal protection.

Objectives of Courses

The courses are intended to help the students understand the basic concept about management science, extend the spirit of management science to non-profit-making organizations and social service, and practice the theories under management science in real life by means of program implementation. The objectives of the courses are stated as following:

1.  Introduce the basic knowledge about the management science to help the students establish their correct idea about the management science and train their ability to hold the position as the first-line managers.

2.  Establish the overall concept about the management science as the basis for study on other management-related courses.

3.  The courses are intended to help the students understand the basic concept about management science, and extend the spirit of management science to non-profit-making organizations and social service. Enable the students to practice the theories under the management science in real life through service learning to fulfill the “Holistic Education”, and train the students’ core competency, care and civil responsibility for future employment.

Model and contents of implementation of service programs

Model and contents of implementation of service programs:

1.     Preparation/conception:

Communication for courses

(1)   Introduction to and selection of the objectives of courses and service recipient – 1st week.

(2)   Requirements about meeting – 2nd week.

(3)   Presentation of meeting minute – 3rd week.

2.     Service/action:

Experiencing

(1)   Determine the service recipient and theme/details of the proposal – 4th week.

(2)   Submit the proposal per the service recipient – 5th week.

(3)   The courses adopt the program implementation by groups.

(4)   Start to communicate with the service recipient in the process of providing service, and discuss about the needs of the service recipient and solve problems. – 6th week and 7th week

(5)   2nd Report on proposals – 8th week and 10th week.

(6)   2nd Report on proposals at meeting – 9th week and 11th week.

(7)   Execute the proposals – 6th week~14th week.

(8)   Complete the proposals – 14th week

3.  Introspection/review: -15th week

By 3 “W”, namely the questionnaire about What (What services I provided?); So What? (What the meaning and learning presented to me by the service?): Now What? (How I will practice what I learned?), and group discussion, to fulfill the “introspection” about service learning.

4.  Celebration/Presentation: -16th week, 17th week and 18th week.

(1)   Organize the sharing of experience to share the learning and growth with each other.

(2)   Organize the presentation of results, final competition, and awarding of prize.

Total service learning hours

Total course hours: 48 hours, and students’ actual service hours no less than 20 hours.

Total number of student team: 6 teams, consisting of a total of 65 persons; total number of service recipients: 260 (number of service recipients*number of frequency).

Descriptions about expected students’ growth in professions

The courses target the “problems” as the starting point of learning to training the students’ active learning, and ability to think and solve problems. By learning the practical knowledge in the process of solving problems, the students may practice the management theories in real life by implementing programs through the service learning. As a result, their core competency for future employment and care may be trained.
