(Evaluation on Service Programs)

The “service learning” aims to promote the courses combining “service” and “learning”.  By upholding the experiential education as the main scheme, we communicate the importance of combination of “profession”, “service” and “learning” through scheduled community service programs to boost the reciprocal development of the school, students and communities.

Objectives of Plan

The “community development” consists of such important topics as fulfillment of life quality, local identity and social relationship, which is identified as the concrete practice of life, and also a life attitude and value. The “public participation” is an important approach to practice democratic life and a required procedure to fulfill the community development.

Objectives of Courses

The courses are intended to explore the nature of community development in terms of three factors about the “sustainable thinking” including environment, economy and society, and also verify the contents of community development based on actual cases. The relevant operations hope that the students may target the communities around the school or of the importance for discussion, in order to know the meaning of community development and public participation through physical experience and interaction.

Preparation

To be in line with the public participation and environmental planning, the courses train the students’ ability to work with the local residents in planning and designing, and also teach the students to learn how to design the communication in a manner acceptable by the residents. Therefore, the courses consists of the onsite operations primarily and dictation of experience secondarily.

Service/action

By taking the environmental landscape with respect to which the community requires help, we build a professional learning platform and find out an environmental development program conceived based on the concept about sustainability together with residents. We introduce the community development, design of participating environment and basic concept about sustainability, and then introduce the actual case for 1. Helping community/cluster (elementary school) with the survey on landscape resources to build the environmental resource layout chart. 2. Work with the community (elementary school) to build the community resource map. 3. Co-build the local community experience and knowledge together with the local residents to experience the results shared by the service.

Introspection/review

To study the reports related to the service recipient before the courses, write the service logs in the process of the service, and conduct group discussion and oral report at the end of the courses. To review the contents of service, meaning of learning and future application through introspection.

Rating criteria

(Please include the way to assess service programs.)

20% for attendance to class, 50% for participation in discussion, and 30% for sharing of experience.
