二、課程目標

Foreign Language Teaching Methods and Materials is a survey course to provide prospective English teachers an overview of both traditional and innovative language teaching methods for learners of diverse learning backgrounds. Not only the principles guiding language learning and teaching will be discussed, students will also be given opportunities to incorporate relevant techniques in teaching in Chung Yuan Elementary School. During the semester, students will embark on an exciting adventure: going through step-by-step training in the real classroom setting and exploring the art of language teaching, which is not only about theories but also everyday decisions and dilemmas in teaching-learning processes.

三、課程內容

Ÿ   In-class Presentations:

One of the effective ways of learning is through discussion with peers. This is the purpose of the “in-class presentations.” Two different groups will be formed:

u Pair: TWO people form a team that will be in charge of discussion questions in the particular week. TWO teams are in charge of one week. Chapter of the presentation can be found in the “activity” column of each week in the class schedule. In general, presentation is to answer questions listed after each chapter in Brown’s book. The instructor will announce the detailed content of the presentation in class each week. During the presentation, each group member will be evaluated individually.

v Group: Three to four people form a group. This group will select one film/book with the central theme of ‘education’, ‘teaching’ or ‘learning’—language teaching/learning is preferred, but not exclusively on language teaching/learning. The purpose of doing group presentation is to select the particular features of the film/book, and link those features to the interpretation of theories/techniques discussed in our course. Possible topics include: educational philosophy, beliefs, approaches to teaching, teacher’s role, interactions between teachers and students, socio-cultural climax in relation to the curriculum implementation/pedagogic practices, or specific issues related to learning or teaching, e.g. learning difficulties, teaching literature/drama/ vocabulary, and others.

Ÿ   Practicum:

An important feature of this course is to allow students to have hand-on experience of teaching: practicum. One class session from each grade will be recorded every week.

u Lesson Plan: Students need to complete and submit their lesson plan to the instructor prior to the individual meeting. In the lesson plan need to include the following details:

–          Level of your lesson

–          Goal that you want to achieve through this lesson (what do you expect students to learn)

–          The focal point of your lesson, i.e. the grammatical points or expressions.

–          Numbers of your students.

–          Activities in your class.

–          The props, e.g. visual adds, poster, realia… etc. Each step of your teaching, including timing and purposes

v Reflection Journal (Teaching Diary): Students need to complete the teaching diary to reflect their teaching every week. Based on the feedback from the teacher, students can improve their teaching skills.

準備

l   了解服務對象需求、結合課程所學。

l   建立合作關係,共同擬定服務計畫(服務學習目標、雙方需求、工作項目) 。

l   學生前至服務機構與相關負責人員熟識商討可進行服務之項目內容:學生參考國小方面所提供的服務對象之學習內容,事先完成教材製作與教法設計。

l   服務前訓練與每週於課程中持續服務學習內容進行訓練

服務

服務(service) 工作內容要點

l   因服務對象多元,就參與服務學習學生特質或經驗,進行媒合。

l   確定服務工作性質,與課程所學結合。

l   討論並與服務對象達成共識: 含服務參與及方式(個別/小組、直接/間接、時間/時段等的彈性多元選擇,服務時間之安排。

l   設計並交叉進行服務過程反思活動。

反省

反思(reflection) 工作內容要點

l   演說:口頭發表、故事分享或團體討論,透過口頭報告可以更深層的了解個人的領悟。

l   書寫:日誌或主題式或檔案夾,透過書寫形式的反思可以練習寫作技巧並組織自己的思考。

l   多媒體:照片、影片或藝術作品呈現,透過多媒體可以創造出情感及視覺的表達。

l   討論:每週進行服務學習後,授課教師會與參與服務學生團隊一起觀看服務學習之錄影並且檢討改進英語教材教法,以求教學的精進,協助服務對象達到預期學習成果

l   以頒獎(證)、慶功宴、師長表揚、與服務機構表揚等多元方式進行成果分享與驗收

l   從服務學習經驗中建立關懷文化、肯定參與貢獻、激起持續服務承諾

七、評量方式

Ÿ   Midterm exam: 20 %                                                     

Ÿ   Final exam: 20 %

Ÿ   Practicum (includes lesson plans, reflection journals/teaching diaries, portfolio, peer review): 40%

Ÿ   Absence+ Ask for leave for more than 4 times (lecture or practicum): failure

Ÿ   Presentations (2 times): 20 %
